Lunching in Style at Urban!

City folks looking for a quick business lunch should head on over to Urban at Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur. Urban, a modern eclectic restaurant with French influences is a favorite hotspot of many gourmands. Helmed by Chef Sharusmizal and team, Urban represents his creative playground for a list of his sumptuous dishes. Urban hasn’t changed much since I last visited and its Aussie native bright orange interior remained as vibrant as ever.

Urban is now offering the Executive Set Lunch Menu available from Mondays to Fridays, from 12.00 noon to 2.30pm to cater to the business crowd. Diners can enjoy the 3-course Executive Set Lunch Menupriced at RM50nett. Choose an appetizer, a main course and a dessert from the various selections of each course.

There are three choices of Appetizer and these comprises of salads, various light versions to keep energy going but not heavy to drag one down.

Opt for Caprese Salad, a rich mix of sweet fresh smoked buffalo mozzarella paired with highland tomato wedges, mesclun greens, basil, pesto, olive powder and a few more ingredients. It’s a classic pairing of the Italian flag of red, green and white. The olive powder proved to be a unique addition of flavours.

Caesar Salad is always a crowd pleaser. Romaine lettuce with croutons, shaved parmesan cheese, micro greens and garlicky creamy dressing makes a very tasty and simple salad.

If you are one to go for a luxe salad, then opt for the Nicoise Salad, a classic French salad of tuna, potato, egg, tomato and more. Urban’s version had seared tuna, boiled egg and potato, haricot bean, tomato, onion, greens, caper berry and an anchovy dressing.

Diners have a selection of 5 main courses to choose from and these ranges from French to Italian to American.

Thread Fillet with Kenya Beans, Le Puy Lentil, Crabmeat Beignet, Celeriac Puree and Chardonnay Orange Butter may have a mouthful of ingredients but they all certainly work deliciously together. The crispy skin of the thread fillet is delish and the flesh is firm and sweet. The crabmeat beignet is divine and many would wish for more than one. The light fresh citrus and butter sauce held the ingredients all together.

Another dish worth ordering is the French classic of Ballotine of Chicken & Truffle with Mushroom Puree, Asparagus, Pommes Mouseline, Golden Raisin and Morel Jus. Chicken made lavish with truffle, mushrooms, asparagus and morel jus, it’s definitely a winning combination of earthy moreish flavours. The chicken is also beautifully tender and moist.

For those who prefer their carbs, the Spicy Chili Prawn Spaghetti is simply the perfect pasta for lunch. Pasta cooked al dente, large sweet prawns and spicy chili notes with cheese and herbs is a plate of robust and fiery flavours.

There’s a burger crave in everyone and so one can also opt for the Classic Beef Burger served with steak fries and spicy barbeque sauce. A juicy beefy patty with melted Swiss cheese and the usual sidekicks is completed with toasted sesame bun. The burger is a whopper in size so it’s perfect for big appetites.

There is also a vegetarian option of Vegetable Lasagna. Enjoy oozing melted cheese sauce and tomato sauce on grilled vegetables for pure comfort.

The trio selection of desserts offer diners a nice selections of sweets that are not overly heavy for lunch time.

For a light and refreshing finish, enjoy the Exotic Fruits with Basil Sorbet.

Chocolate lovers should take on the Urban Chocolate Fudge with Home Made Toffee and Sesame Ice Cream. Decadently dark and bittersweet with buttery toffee is given a twisted note of sesame ice cream.

To go the divine route, end the lunch with Crispy Custard of Home Made Crème Brulee with Fresh Fruits. The crack of the toffee on the crème brulee is music to anyone’s ears. The rich and sinful egg cream is offset beautifully by the fresh fruits.

Urban Executive Set Lunch is priced at RM50nett for 3-course and is available from Mondays to Fridays from 12noon to 2.30pm. To know more information about this promo, call 03 2141 9988 ext. 3691.

A Noshing Good Time!

Following its original outlet success in Jaya Shopping Centre, Nosh Up Café opened in the newly renovated Atria Shopping Gallery recently. Taking on a modern comfort approach, the café leans toward a bistro concept where diners can expect modern comfort food with familiar flavours.

A casual stroll into the café one weekday with another foodie had us all settling comfortably into their chic and simple décor. From retro tiles to lots of light natural wood décor all over, Nosh Uphas a bar set in the mid of the café with seating placed casually in the front to all the way in the back of the café. We loved the warm lightings as it sets the mood for casual and yet simple chic charm to the whole ambiance.

Dinner commenced with Lamb Pie (RM24), a sort of deconstructed one. A pot holding aromatic oven braised lamb stew is served alongside a pillow of crispy flaky puff pastry and a disc of potato rosti with some lightly dressed lettuce. The rich earthy tomato stew had delectable chunks of soft lamb that was so tender and tasty together with soft braised vegetables. A sprinkling of cheese added more flavours. Simply take the puff pastry to mop up all the yummy stew for pure comfort enjoyment.

Next up, everyone was definitely eyeing the large golden Crunchy Soft Shell Crab Burger (RM24). Talk about going big, a large crunchy battered soft shell crab that was obviously bursting out of its toasted bun. Barely balanced on lettuce, fresh tomato slice, cheese and surrounded by a moat of thick cut fries, it’s a burger meant for full blast enjoyment. We loved it!!

The Grilled Sotong Sumbat with Rice(RM19) turned out to be a surprised since it was more local than the other dishes at Nosh Up. Nevertheless, you won’t hear us complaining at the rice salad stuffed squid cooked in a luscious creamy coconut curry sauce labeled as Chef’s Special Sauce. It also comes with a small mount of Asian salad which was more of a pickled vegetable side to cut the richness of the very rich sauce. The dish is best savored piping hot and is also good for sharing.

We thought it was quite a smart moved to pair salmon with garlic fried rice in the Smoked Salmon Garlic Fried Rice(RM19). Obviously the dish seemed to be inspired from Japanese and yet, this one tasted more local than its original. Made more tempting with a poached egg with molten center, the best part of the dish is to cut the egg and watch the egg yolk oozes out to lux up the garlicky fried rice. A side of Asian salad again was also present to remind us how local flavours will always prevail in the dish.

More Asian fusion dishes followed pursuit in Smoked Duck Miso Pasta (RM22). This dish was quite a hit among us that evening. The pasta had a nice nutty saltish miso note and tasted even better with the poached egg. I have always enjoyed smoked duck so bingo again for points in the dish.

Then we went French with Nosh Up’s version of Duck Leg Confit with Orange Sauce (RM35). The duck confit was tender but not mushy and had luscious deep smoky flavours. I would wished for a better crisp on the skin but it’s very minor as the duck is delicious with the roasted potatoes, sautéed onions with peppers and tangy orange sauce. Good effort and definitely worthy of an order if you love duck!

After all the delicious dishes earlier, the Crispy Lamb Shank (RM38) was the only dish that fell a bit short. It’s good on flavours but the lamb was a tad on the dryer end. Never fear because all one needs to do is smothered the lamb with the side of tomatoey sauce. Served with more potatoes and dressed greens, the dish is pretty filling and value for money for big meat eaters.

We could never resist desserts and decided to go all the way with Tiramisu, Red Velvet and Matcha Cheesecake. These were homemade and changes daily. My favorite of the three was the non-alcoholic Tiramisu with its delicious flavour and texture. The Red Velvet is made with beetroot for its signature color so it’s another plus point to enjoy the cake sans the coloring. The Matcha Cheesecake has a solid flavour of the intense green tea that seemed to hold its flavour against the Oreo chocolate.

Finally, a classic twisted of Banana Fritters Split (RM14) completed our meal. It looked a tad messy but once you have dig in, you will be loved by its icy ice creams contrasting with crispy banana fritters and chocolate sauce.

Don’t forget, order Nosh Up’sRosy Raspberry Lychee Mocktail or Iced Chocolate to quench your thirst!

Castell Gastrobar @ PJ Section 16

Classics Made Even Better!

A restaurant that has been serving up over three decades of steaks and other gastropub food can only attest that the restaurant must be doing something right! Many fans would definitely agree that Castell Gastrobar, located in Section 16 at Petaling Jaya, has been serving up many wonderful and satisfying dining experiences throughout the years.

After a recent major facelift, Castell Gastrobar is now back in the ownership of its original owner’s family. Chef John Lee, nephew of the original owner is back helming the kitchen of Castell. The gastrobar has been famous for their steaks and hearty pub grub back then and Chef John is now reviving those good old days with his signature steaks and classic pub food with his own twist. For those who may not be aware, Chef John also has another restaurant called Riblees in Sri Hartamas that is a personal favorite joint of mine.

Castell’s décor is kept to minimalist design, playing on their theme of wood with cream, black and red. Its casual comfort and makes it easygoing for their diners to hangout for great bites and some beer. From chalkboard menu to super cool posters (that is bound to catch your attention) and a tv screen for sports fan, Castellis bound to be your favorite neighborhood gastrobar if it hasn’t already.

We decided on giggle juices to relax that evening and so we took on the AK47 and Mojito cocktails. Looks innocent but was told the AK47 was super potent from my dining partner from her aftermath the next day!

Some dishes are just oldies but goldies. In this case, the old school prawn cocktails makes a comeback in the menu with Castell’s Prawn Cocktail (RM21). Served the old fashioned recipe, it’s a pretty presentation of poached sweet prawns with shredded lettuce and thousand island sauce. Simple and enjoyable because it brings back memories of my yesteryears savoring this dish in a few Western restaurants back then.

Chef John’s Dragon Wings (RM20) are quite the legendary dish at Castell’s. That evening, I spied most tables have an order of this dish. After a taste, I can see why. These super addictive spiced up wings are marinated with Naga Jolokiachilies and other spices before being charbroiled and served with limes. The heat slowly creeps up on my taste bud and before I know it, the kick of heat started to get my adrenalin going for more of this juicy smoky wings. Must order!!

Two large mushrooms gratinated with lots of cheese sauce and beef bacon summed up the Baked Portabello Mushrooms(RM22). These are so meaty and juicy. It was literally an explosion of juices in the mouth with each bite of the portabello mushrooms. Makes a great sharing started or even a light meal on its own.

If you need your greens, then Chef John recommended his Spinach Salad (RM23). Not just any ordinary salad, this one is jazzed up with beef bacon, caramelized walnuts, radish, cucumber, baby spinach, feta cheese and a tangy balsamic vinaigrette. Ok, if I have to eat my greens, I wouldn’t mind this one…

I must raved at the Castell’s King Prawn Bisque (RM28). A luscious and creamy full flavoured thick prawn bisque is made even more lux with a whole freshwater Sang Har prawn. The bisque is just so tasty and sublime. The intensity of oceanic essence is a gorgeous welcome on the taste bud and the golden toasty garlic toast is perfect to give the bisque a textural touch.

Since Castell is famous for their steaks, its makes sense to try one of their signature steaks of Castell Stilton Special (RM88). Looks petit at sight but once you dived in, the 8 oz Australian pasture fed Angus tenderloin stuffed with pungent Stilton cheese and wrapped with beef bacon is a filling force to be reckoned with. The tenderloin yield like butter to the knife. It only has basic salt and pepper seasoning to let the Angus beef shine in its own beefy flavours. I adored the powerful blue cheese with the steak and thought it was such a bold combination. The light broiled on the cheese made it even better. Served with steak fries and salad, this classic still has what it takes to pleased steak and cheese lovers like it has over the years.

Pssst… I heard the OP Rib Steak (RM158) is another steak to order as it showcased a staggering 20 oz Australian pasture fed Angus beef on rib bones.

If beef if not your thing, then the Slow Roasted Oregano Lamb (RM40) might work for you. Boneless slices of Australian lamb shoulder is also tender with a subtle hint of oregano. The lamb went well with the roasted potato, steamed vegetables and gravy.

It’s a man thing with burgers! Men love their burgers big and thick and so Big John’s Beef Burger (RM26) caters to the mega hunks of burgers with its whopping thick patty of Australian prime minced sandwiched with all the usual suspects of the burger condiments. Fried egg and beef bacon together with a whole jalapeno takes the burger to the next level of flavours. Served with side of steak fries and pickles. Feeling manly? Grab one of these…

It’s my first time tasting Mutton Bolognaise(RM28) and I was sufficiently pleased with this. Mutton tend to have a stronger flavour and this was cleverly well masked with the bolognaise sauce. Robust in flavours, the pasta also has a slice of garlic toast, served just the way it used to be. These days I hardly find pasta dishes served with the toast.

Castell Gastrobar is a gem. Reviving the yesteryears dishes is definitely a plus point in today’s F&B scene. The older generation of foodies will certainly appreciate Castell’s menu while younger generation of foodies should experience how food used to be in the earlier food scene. There’s plenty more in the menu such as Crab & Corn Cakes, Scotch Eggs, Ribs, Castell’s Grilled Spring Chicken, Grilled Kurau Steaks and more to tempt me back to this joint!

Modern European Fine Dining with a Majestic KL Skyline View

The city never fails to amaze many and its night charm is best viewed from high above the skyscrapers for the full effect. One of the place to enjoy the city’s gorgeous view and to also indulge in a sumptuous meal of fine dining gastronomy is at Cedar on 15 at Impiana KLCC Hotel. The modern European dining located on the 15th floor of the hotel offers a luxe dining experience and hangout bar for many. Whether you are here for its European cuisine or the KL skyline view, you are assured that this will be an unforgettable experience of what this city has to offer.

Choose to dine in elegance at its modern contemporary dining room brought to life by its bold interior design themed of cool black, grey, red and white illuminated by the massive freeform curves of the lighting or simply head over to the alfresco area backed with lots of glass panels to offer one of the best city skyline views to lounge casually by the open bar. Either space is fine as the main open or grilled kitchen offers diners a sumptuous 2 page menu of delights.

That evening was wet and heading to the city was an obstacle but as soon as I walked into Cedar on 15, every ounce of stress magically disappears as I sat down to a Cosmopolitan to unwind my day.

Fresh House Bread Rolls were served with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The breads were so yummy, a good indication that dinner can only get better.

A course of Amuse Bouche of Salmon played up our appetites to look forward to more dishes to come.

Cedar on 15’s latest dining concepts takes on the aromatic oils from Vom Fass, a gourmet company that produces fine oils, vinegars, spices, wines and spirits. The menu is carefully paired with selected Vom Fass oils at every course from start to finish.

Dinner commenced with Cedar Salad with Pomegranate Balsam (RM42). Tender leaves of baby spinach paired with sharpness of freshly shaved parmesan, toasted pine nuts and a mustard walnut vinaigrette is a treat of freshness. Though the salad is flavourful already, diners are encourage to explore and drizzle on the Vom Fass Pomegranate Balsam for extra oomph of fruity sweetness.

The next course of Fresh Burrata Cheese with Basil Olive Oil (RM45) was a personal favorite. Fresh Burrata cheese is hard to come by in our country and this one was divine. Read off the menu as Air flown from Italy, the young creamy and soft mozzarella is painstakingly wrapped with a balsamic gelee into a long cylindrical pipe and presented with sweet slices of roma tomatoes, greens, herb pesto and Vom Fass Basil Olive Oil. Using thin pipette to add droplets of the intense basil olive oil really brought out the luscious burrata flavours to a crescendo. The balsamic gelee also pulled its weight in cutting through the richness of the cheese and oils with its tangy sweet notes.

Jeruselum artichoke is an unfamiliar ingredient here but once you have tried it in the Cream of Topin Ambour with Truffle Oil(RM38), you will be pleased on how wonderful this root vegetable is. Also known as earth apple or sunchoke, the flavours of this Topin Ambour is more refine with a mellow rich earthy note. Each spoonful of the silky smooth bisque is enhanced further with the highly raved truffle oil. The bisque also has baby bocconcini on crouton as an extra treat. Poured tabled side, the bisque is piping hot and extremely satisfying on the palate.

Vying for equal attention in the bisque section is another gorgeous dish of Australian Scallop Velouté with Garlic Oil(RM52). The sweetest sliced raw scallops together with a sundried tomato timbale is gently cooked in the luscious and velvety seafood velouté. The dish is a brilliant and thoroughly thought of dish as each element contributed to indulgence of the dish. From sweetness of the scallop to the savory creamy seafood bisque and the tangy sundried tomato, it’s a dish of finesse and flavour!

More indulgence took form in our main course of Lobster ala Cedar with Vegetable Tagiatelle and Garlic Oil (RM388). Served two ways, each half of the Boston lobster was grilled with herb oil. One half was grilled and served on extreme heat from the block of Himalayan Rock Salt to boost the aroma of the king of crustacean and the other half was served with a side of vegetable tagiatelle.

The half on the Himalayan rock salt block had more smoky and charred notes, rendering more intense essence of the lobster with unadulterated taste whereas the other half showed off more delicate sweetness of the crustaceans. The second half was also juicier. Either way, add on the Vom Fass Garlic Oil for another dimension of garlicky flavours to the sweet lobster.

Cedar on 15 also has a solid list dry aged beef featuring various cuts of Australian Black Angus and Wagyu. We opted for the Black Angus Filet Mignon with Rosemary Oil (RM88) with side of Mashed Potato with Truffle (RM14). The Black Angus had such a robust beefy flavour and was buttery and tender too. Cooked to medium rare to my preference, the beef really only needed some salt and pepper. A few drops of rosemary oil raised the bar in aroma.

Though all grilled meat comes with a side dish, we decided to go one step further and opted for the extra special side of Mashed Potato with Truffle. No regrets as the mashed was so smooth and creamy with a good hit of truffle aroma.

There is also lamb for non-beef lovers, and the New Zealand Lamb Loin with Porcini Oil (RM84) was beautifully presented on a plate with a kaleidoscope of colors. Lamb loin crusted in parsley crust and cooked to lovely pink medium was surrounded by fondant potato and served with a side of oven roasted brassica vegetables. The lamb loin was tender and went well with the rich demi-glazed sauce. The light parsley notes gave the lamb a unique aroma. I would definitely encourage diners to add on the porcini oil for this dish because the piquant porcini aroma went so well with the lamb.

Our last main dish of the evening was Seafood Aglio Olio Spaghetti (RM48). Executed well with all the markings of al dente pasta soaking up the garlicky chili oil and seafood, there’s no reason why this dish is not a contender with the other dishes on the menu.

We were full from all the courses and yet our heart wandered longingly for dessert as it seems the right experience at Cedar on 15 should end all the way with a sweet note. The Crepe Suzette with Grand Marnier (RM44) wasn’t flambéed at our table but we didn’t mind. The thin crepes were decent and had a good soaking of orange and Grand Marnier while the ice cream made it more luscious. Not the best I have had but enough to really make our dining experience a satiating one.

Our dining at Cedar on 15 was truly a luxuriant and pampered experience. It was everything from food to ambience and the city’s view that made this unforgettable. All out to impress someone? Bring them to Cedar on 15…

Mido Korean BBQ Restaurant @ SS2, Petaling Jaya

Korean BBQ in Style

Korean cuisine has taken our dining scene by storm. Many have sprouted all over our nation and now Korean cuisine is gearing up to be as popular as Japanese cuisine. The Koreans are indeed famous for their Kimchi. You’ll either love it or hate it. Glad to say, most Malaysians do love it as well as their other signatures like Korean BBQ and stews. Even my family admits to indulging Korean cuisine at least 3 times a month.

One of the latest Korean restaurant in Petaling Jaya is Mido, located at the bustling SS2 area. Mido is the brilliant brainchild of young Korean business owner Mr. Joseph Lee and his partners. After arriving in Malaysia, Joseph has decided to pursue his F&B interest to add on to his other businesses. The young entrepreneur opened Mido in July this year, serving up lots of Korean classics of BBQ, stews and even Korean Fried Chicken.

The restaurant’s front is designed to look just a like a Korean house with big heavy wooden doors. There are two windows on each side and unlike most restaurants, one cannot see the dining unless the windows are open. Walking into Mido, diners are immediately transported to warm and vibrant interior filled with lots of wood. We were told that Mido’s interior is actually designed and finished by Joseph and his team as well. Vibrant warm walls, sectioned panels giving diners privacy, Korean Hahoe masks, paper lanterns and more earthy elements summed up the gorgeous interior. Mido also has private rooms with seating on the floor.

Dining at Mido certainly feels like I was transported elsewhere, without any trace of the bustling SS2 traffic outside since the whole restaurant is closed up. Another plus point for Mido, they use the underground ventilation system which is better as it prevents the usual BBQ smoke from seeping into our clothes and hair.

Let’s eat! Korean meal is never without Banchan. These side dishes are always such a treat and most restaurants allow refills in moderate quantity. Mido serves less Banchan than other restaurants I know but they have more types of sauces and plenty of fresh lettuce, seasoned lettuce together with the fresh cut garlic and green chilies. Their Kimchi is really yummy and we kept having refills of this gladly. Mido serves four sauces – Sesame Oil with Salt, Ssamjang, Basiland Peanut sauce. Though classics are good, I really enjoyed the Basil and Peanut sauces as they really perked up the BBQ meats in flavours.

Mido’s menu has limited options of the various cuts of meat but I personally think the ones they have are sufficient for me. The Korean BBQ meats available are Chicken BBQ (RM28 for 200gm), Pork Collar (RM30 for 200gm) Marinated Pork (RM33 for 200gm), Chili Paste Pork (RM33 for 200gm) and Marinated Beef Rib (RM65 for 280gm).

The meats here are cut thicker than most other places I have had and I certainly didn’t mind this at all. The wait staff helps to grill the meat for you so you just need to enjoy them. Once grilled under the hot coals, these meat are deliciously tasty, moist and so irresistible with the sauces and lettuce. I was particularly fond of the Pork Collarand Marinated Pork because of their tasty flavours and tender texture.

While man cannot live alone on BBQ (or maybe they could!), we also had other goodies.

A bowl of Pumpkin Soup came complimentary and this was a good bowl to settle our tummies. It had a good balance of sweetness and savory notes.

Besides the pumpkin soup, we had an order of Doenjang Soup (RM22). A Korean favorite, this bean paste soup has seafood and fresh tofu. It is quite nutty and pungent with a saltish edge but it goes really well with rice.

I love Korean pancakes. We had both of the Seafood Pancake (RM25)and Kimchi Pancake (RM25). Crispy edges, tender doughy inside filled with lots of seafood bits and spring onions, the Seafood Pancake was a big hit among us that evening. The Kimchi Pancake didn’t fall too far behind and had solid kimchi flavours. Look how lovely and crisp the Kimchi Pancake is…

Talk about having a secret weapon at Mido, they serve this wicked dish of Spicy Pork Skin (RM20). Pork skin has loads of collagen so enjoying these are bound to give one some lovely doses of beauty benefits. The gelatinous pork skin is cooked with a good hit of heat and is served with bean powder on the side. We attached this with so much gusto and had a reorder of the dish!

Ok so fried chicken wings are not seen at Korean BBQ places but Korean Fried Chicken are getting quite the attention these days. Mido has two styles of one non spicy and the other spicy. The Korean Fried Chicken Wings (RM25) were decent with a nice balance of savory sweetness while the Spicy Korean Fried Chicken Wings (RM25) had a spicy sweet heavy note.

It was unanimous that we all enjoyed the Tofu Kimchi Casserole (RM45). A big iron pot filled with lots of ingredients such as kimchi, vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, Korean vermicelli, rice cakes, sausages and more sat in a pool of kimchi based soup. As the stew boils, the soup intensify in flavours and the ingredient are gently cook to absorb the pungent and spicy kimchi flavours. It’s very comforting in many ways or maybe I just happen to be a big kimchi lover… yum!

We also had their Bulgogi Casserole(RM48). Bulgogi is a classic favorite dish in Korea. Here the beef is marinated in the classic sweet flavours of Bulgogi and is accompanied by lots of vegetables, mushrooms and Korean vermicelli noodles in a beefy sweet broth. It was slightly a tad too sweet for my preference but that’s how Bulgogi taste and so there’s really nothing to fault here but my own taste bud. Others didn’t seemed to mind and enjoy the beefy sweet stew happily.

Don’t forget to order Makkoli (RM28), a Korean rice wine that went so well with the BBQ meats, Spicy Pork Skin and Korean Fried Chicken Wings. I love how it was served in a big clay bowl to be ladled on smaller bowls to be sipped slowly.

Mido serves solid authentic Korean BBQ and stews. Their plus points are the gorgeous ambience to enjoy a hearty meal of Korean BBQ and stews. Highlights includes Spicy Pork Skin, Korean BBQ, Seafood Pancake and Tofu Kimchi Casserole. Oh… and don’t forget to order the Makkoli for extra happiness…

Modern Japanese Dishes & Desserts!

I have always had the perception that Nana’s Green Tea is a dessert house. That is until a recent visit to Nana’s Green Tea that I had discovered that they also serve a solid list of modern Japanese dishes besides their awesome signatures of desserts. Nana’s Green Tea was the brainchild of Kazuto Kutami, who took on the challenge of revolution of the F&B scene and came up with the thoughts of preserving the Japanese tea culture through a modern inspiration. Green tea has always been Japan’s pride and joy, so it was really only sensible to run the concept on green tea inspired desserts and beverages. With nearly 80 outlets in Japan, Nana’s Green Tea has truly become a favorite among the young and the old in the country.

The first Nana’s Green Tea in Malaysia opened in April 2014 at Mid Valley City and today, there are 3 outlets located in Mid Valley, One Utama and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Managing Director Ms. Valerie was inspired on her trips to Japan and decided to bring Nana’s Green Tea to our Malaysian shores. We are glad she did because Nana’s Green Tea serves some of the most awesome green tea dishes and beverages.

We visited the One Utama outlet which is located quite discreetly between the old and new wing link path. Nana’s Green Teais housed in a spacious outlet with two levels of dining. Choose the al fresco dining level or the upper level for a comfortable dining. The ambience is decorated in warm and neutral tones in lots of light wood. The ceiling of the upper level is constructed by the inspiration of a hand held fan and lots of mini egg-lites for a subtle glow.

There are plenty of Japanese Sampuru or plastic food displays at the front of the restaurant to tempt diners!

I was impressed at the menu of Nana’s Green Tea as there are some really gorgeous lists of dishes as well as the mind-boggling and beautifully organized beverages and desserts. Of course, most of the menu revolved around green tea but if you really are not a fan, there are also non-tea dishes, beverages and desserts.

Ordering beverages and desserts is truly a difficult choice because I seemed to want to order everything on the menu! And then I calmed down and tried the following…

Matcha Soft Cream Latte (RM14.90) and Hoji Kuromitsu Latte (RM12.60, served hot, are so delicious! The intensity of the matcha in Matcha Soft Cream is just right, powerful and yet not overwhelming with creamy luscious notes. The roasted green tea in Hoji Kuromitsu Latte was also rich and has an additional earthy warm note to the additional of green tea flavours and black sugar syrup.

If you love the ice blended versions, go for their slushy variations. Our Matcha Kanten Slushy (RM11.50) and Matcha Kuromitsu Slushy (RM11.50) was icy and refreshing. The Kanten, or a type of agar derived from red seaweed, is very good in texture and flavours. It is quite firm and yet has a good feel texture with solid green tea flavour. The Kanten was the highlight of the drink for me. The Matcha Kuromitsu Slushy had the addition of the Japanese black syrup which resembles a rich molasses but less heavier.

Matcha Azuki Shiratama Latte (RM14.90) would be another good choice if you love Shiratama. These cute little sweet rice flour dumplings are lightly soft and chewy. The latte is creamy with good flavours of green tea and bits of creamy red bean.

If you are a real tea connoisseur, then you should definitely go for Nana’s Green Tea Uji Matcha (RM18.50)! It’s such an indulgence of bittersweet intense green tea with such refine and elegant note. As we watch our server carefully stir the green tea powder into the warm water and whisked it gracefully, a bright rich green tea color appeared with a layer of creamy froth. Such artistry all for the sake of a cup of warm and delicious Uji Matcha.

Moving on meals, the menu here features trendy Japanese dishes that also has much warmness incorporated for a light, healthy and delicious meal. Catered to all diners at all ages, there is really something for everyone.

We started with Salmon Carpaccio(RM18.40), where pieces of salmon are sliced thinly and served with a tangy vinaigrette dressing together with fresh bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and pea sprouts. A decent appetizer to kick off any meal.

The Chicken Karaage Salad (RM16.00) is very drool-worthy with big chunks of Japanese battered boneless fried chicken served with greens, boiled egg, tomatoes and tangy dressing. High points goes to the juicy and flavorful crispy fried chicken as it is such a well-made one. Using boneless chicken thighs, the fried chicken is also tender.

Moving on to heavier dishes, we had the Seafood Mentaiko Udon with Cream Sauce (RM33.60). One simply must enjoy this dish piping hot as the rich pink cream sauce gets too heavy when it is cold. When it is hot, the chewy udon goes so well with the saltish mentaiko cream sauce that also comes with scallops and prawns.

Leaning towards the simple and comforting angle is the Wakame Tamago Udon (RM18.40). This healthy dish has udon in seaweed broth, lots of seaweeds and a poached egg. Its really simple but flavour are so good and soothing.

For a Western touch, there is also the Locomoco Hamburg (RM23.90). A thick patty of chicken hamburg is smothered with a moreish and savory brown sauce. Served with options of rice and some vegetables and egg, the dish also comes with a side bowl of soup. I enjoyed the juick hamburg patty but thought the sauce was a tad too salty for me. However, when savored with the rice, the sauce seemed to be alright in taste.

Tori Soboro Don (RM19.60) also proved to be another comfort dish that one can enjoy on daily basis. This one reminds me of my younger childhood meal where mom used to make with minced meat and egg. Minced chicken, lots of sesame seed, pea sprouts and soft boiled egg on rice is a healthy and perfectly nutritional meal on its own. Once the egg is stirred into the rice, it helped to sauce the whole dish and bring the meat and rice together. Yum!

Nana’s Green Tea Lunch sets are quite a treat as they are priced at RM21.90 which includes a main course from the selected lunch menu and a beverage from Set Drinks. This is available during weekday from 10am to 5pm and weekends & public holidays from 10am to 3pm.

We tried three choices of their lunch set dishes. First one is their best seller, the Chicken Nanban. Crispy fried chicken cutlet is topped with a luscious mayo based sauce. It is served with white rice or millet rice (add on RM4.50), Japanese potato salad and some vegetables. This dish is sufficient for heavy eaters and is quite a filler, especially during lunch but many will be glad as the dish is easy and delicious to enjoy.

The Kitsune Udon has such pretty colors all on a bowl of udon with chilled broth. Lots of fresh purple and green lettuce with pea sprouts, corn, grilled eggplant, cherry tomatoes and bean curd puff gave this dish a delicate and fresh note. I personally really enjoyed this chilled udon with vegetables as there are lots of different flavours and textures in the dish. It also won’t leave one with a heavy feeling when they return to work after the meal.

Japanese curry lovers will enjoy the Chicken Cutlet Curry, another generous portion of crumbed and fried chicken cutlet served with white rice, Japanese curry sauce and pickled vegetable with a side of soup. I do enjoy the Japanese curry sauce as it is not sweet and leaned towards savory with just the right balance of spices.

There is always a monthly promotion featuring special dishes and desserts of the month. While I was there, there was the August Promotion featuring a Sweet & Sour Fish. Crispy chunks of lightly battered fish is tossed with the Japanese version of tangy vinegary based sweet and sour sauce with mushrooms and peppers. These are served with millet rice, Japanese styled rolled omelette, boiled sweet pumpkin and soup. It’s not like our usual classic sweet and sour but I still enjoy the dish as it had home cooked soothing tangy flavours.

Another August Promotion treat not to be missed is the Tropical Parfait (RM23.10). This one is divine and just so darn scrumptious. The long list of ingredients that made up the parfait includes coconut pudding, read bean porridge, vanilla soft cream, corn flakes, coconut ice cream, mango sorbet, fresh mango and kiwi and cream. I literally wanted to hog this to myself as the combination is so good. I did feedback to Nana’s Green Tea to try and put this on the regular menu as it is such a gorgeous dessert!

Other parfaits we tried from their regular menu are their signatures of Matcha Nama Chocolat Parfait (RM23.10) and Hoji Gateaux Chocolat Parfait(RM23.10). it was a tough a decision on deciding which one was my favorite as both were also good on their own flavours.

From layers of Kanten green tea jelly to vanilla soft cream, red bean, cornflakes, green tea ice cream and Nama green tea together with whipped cream and green tea sauce, it was certainly fun digging into this tall parfait.

The choclat version similar ingredients but is chocolate instead of green tea. Instead of Nama choclate, there is Shiratama balls and two scoops of chocolate ice cream and sorbet. Digging into the parfait is like unwrapping presents as one get to unveal and taste the different layers of textures and flavours in the parfait.

Kinako Warabimochi (RM17.20) came highly recommended and we can understand why after we had a taste. The mocha is coated with kinako, a sweet toasted soybean powder. Simply drizzled the Kuromitsu syrup over the mocha and savor. The texture of the mocha is delightful and lightly bouncy. There is a nutty element of taste in the dessert while the black honey syrup added more richness to the dessert.

After savoring Nana’s Green Tea, I find myself wondering when I can be back to savor more treats. While the meal is decent and delicious, it was really the beverages and desserts that truly won our hearts. There are plenty of reasons to visit Nana’s Green Tea and even if you don’t think you have one, Nana’s Green Tea is still worth a try… who knows, you may be hook just like me!

Celebrating 36 Years of Deliciousness!

It’s a rare gem to find a restaurant that has been serving up good food over three decades and those who do, deserves a standing ovation. Run by a husband and wife team, New Formosa Restaurant, located in SS2 at Petaling Jaya, certainly deserves an accolade for their joint effort. New Formosa is one of the oldest Taiwanese restaurant in the vicinity and has been serving authentic Taiwanese cuisine to many since 1980. The owners, Mr. Lee Weng Eng and Mrs. Jeanie Lee, are such dedicated owners who runs New Formasa every day throughout the year and only closes for a few days a year. While Mr. Lee, who happens to be the chef, runs the back kitchen, Mrs. Lee is the perfect hostess in the front of the restaurant.

With 36years and counting, New Formosa is celebrating their 36th Anniversary with a delicious bang, which includes celebratory menus of New Formosa’s signature dishes and the Taiwanese Formosa Stone-Fire Pot promotion. Diners are treated to a long list of scrumptious Taiwanese dishes that has continue to be favorites throughout the years. Seating are limited and New Formosa gets really busy so make sure to make your reservations if you are dining in parties.

To celebrate any special occasions, diners can opt for New Formosa’s Set Menus that caters from a minimum of 2 pax to 10 pax. Prices ranges from RM68 to RM598 for the various set menus. For more details, please check out the full menus here.

To celebrate any special occasions, the Formosa Special Combination is a great and gorgeous platter for indulgence. Showcasing five various dishes all on a platter, diners are treated to New Formosa’s signature dishes that are truly unique and deliciously tempting. Besides the pretty Oriental presentation of the dish, the portions are generous as well.

The Butter Fish Slices Formosa Style is a treat of crispy golden fish slices sautéed with lots of buttery crumbs and curry leaves. The dish is beautifully aromatic and has a lovely richness of buttery notes. I heard that New Formosa does a mean Butter Eel version too!

Yam Balls sounds a bit mundane but rest assured, these are delicious with a lovely creamy powdery yam note. Another favorite dish of mine on the platter as the croquette is really flavourful and moreish.

The Deep Fried Oysters Taiwanese Styleis simply divine. Just the perfect size oysters in light golden crispy batter enhanced with crispy basil leaves are beautifully succulent. As soon as one bites into the oysters, the juiciness fills the mouth with a glorious briny flavour of the oyster.

Taiwan Famous 3-Cup Sotong is a twist from the classic chicken version. No complaints here as the squid makes a nice change from the chicken and really took on the savory, sweet and aromatic flavours of the classic 3-cup sauce.

The last one turned out to be quite unique. Stuffed Lotus Root with Special Fish Paste combined the unique texture of crunchy lotus root with the bouncy fish paste. The subtle sweetness of the lotus root goes well with the savory notes of the fish paste.

Moving on to another dish of Steamed Village Chicken with Black Fungus, it was a unanimous agreement that we all enjoyed this dish a lot that evening. Firm village chicken is smothered in a garlic and ginger sauce together with black wood fungus. The chicken flesh is smooth with a lovely firm skin and is firm yet tender. It was the gingery sauce that really took the chicken flavours to another level of deliciousness. A dish that revels comfort in very sense and perfect with steamed rice…

Bamboo Yam Rice is another signature dish of New Formosa. There is much to love about this dish. Served in a long bamboo case, the fluffy yam rice is gorgeous in flavours. Lots of ingredients of yam, pumpkin, Chinese sausage, dried shrimp, mushrooms, fried shallots and scallions made up the rice. It’s no wonder the rice is so tasty. The dish is literally a complete one-dish meal on its own!

In every Chinese meal, fish is always a must. Here, we had the Local Sea Bass with Hot Bean Sauce and Mantao. Albeit unusual to serve fish with Mantao but it is there for a reason. The sea bass is drenched in a piquant hot bean sauce that beckons for that bun to soak up the flavours for more enjoyment. The sweetness of the silky flesh of the sea bass still manages to stand out pretty well against the heavy rich sauce.

Crab lovers will rejoice at New Formosa’s Sweet & Sour Crab Claws. I know I did. And one of the best perks of the dish is that New Formosa serves crab claws alone in this dish. The claw is the more sought after part of the crab and here, diners can dig in and enjoy the crab claws cooked in a luscious sweet and sour sauce with light laces of egg strands. The sauce is simply marvelous and it hits all the right balance of sweet, savory, spicy and tangy notes. I couldn’t resist enjoying the sauce with mantao buns.

Besides all the signature dishes from the set menu, diners can enjoy New Formosa Stone-Fire Pot promotion for only RM20 per person (minimum 3 persons per table) plus a free MuaChi dessert. Featuring 22 ingredients, this hotpot is such a treat and great to end the day with such a soothing meal of soup and fresh ingredients. This promotional price is available on weekdays only and for a limited time so call for more details.

There are various steps to enjoying this Taiwanese hotpot. First, the staff will sauté the aromatics and the special Taiwanese Sa Cha sauce (Satay sauce) and add in chicken and squid.

Once that has finished cooking, we are told to enjoy the chicken and squid as they are dishes up and served. The smoky moreish flavours of the Sa Cha sauce is quite addictive.

Prawns are added to the pot and the cooking continues. These large prawns are additional order and are not part of the promotional price package.

Then the rest of the ingredients are slowly added in different stages of cooking to be enjoyed throughout the meal. Stock is added for the ingredients to be cooked in.

What makes New Formosa Stone-Fire Potworth savoring are the classic and unusual ingredients that goes into this hotpot. From Chinese cabbage, fried yam, tomatoes, assorted mushrooms, corn, angle luffa, seaweed, boiled mustard leaves, bean curd to fish maws, meat balls and fish balls, minced pork balls, pig stomach, pig intestines and the list goes on.

The soup was so sweet and tasty as the ingredients continue to be added and cooked. There is a nutty and sublime flavour of the soup that I enjoyed that night. It is quite different from our usual hotpot flavours as this one is richer and nutty with a smoky note. At the end of the hotpot meal and if you still have more room, do enjoy homemade noodles, vermicelli and egg!

Just when I thought the meal cannot get any better, Mrs. Jeanie whipped out her favorite dessert of Green Tea Pudding with Red Bean and Sweet Yam in Honey Sauce. Though both are not part of the hotpot package, it might be worthy of an order as these are unique desserts that end your Taiwanese meal on a fresh and sweet note.

The chilled Green Tea Pudding with Red Beanhas a QQ textured konyakku green tea jelly with an intense bittersweet green tea note. The red bean paste offset the green tea with some sweetness.

The Sweet Yam in Honey sauce is simply a must-order! Cooked yam is coated in caramelized honey sauce and quickly soaked in cold water to give the yam its famous crunchy crystallized texture with a soft creamy inside. Simply aromatic and super scrumptious!!

If you have never been to New Formosa, head on over for a taste of Taiwanese cuisine from the passionate owners. Food at New Formosa are dishes that diners will enjoy after a long day at work. The dishes are comforting, reflecting memories of home cook dishes that many will enjoy. With their various set menus and promotion going on this 36th Anniversary, it’s a great time to taste what New Formosa has been offering all these years to many diners.

Feast Big with 9 Sensational Experiences!

Good Golly Miss Molly! There’s a new kid in town and its BIG… a haven for foodies looking for a feast. Brolly is the name and 9 experiences is their game. Seek out Brolly at Menara Felda in Kuala Lumpur along Persiaran KLCC. Brolly represents all 9 kitchens under its umbrella. Foodies are tempted with so much different cuisines all neatly married under one roof!

It’s the perfect place to dine, wine and enjoy with family, friends and business associates as there is plenty for everyone in choices of their menu. Going the extra mile, Brolly takes foodies around the world with a little something from American cuisine, Italian cuisine, and Japanese cuisine to our very own local cuisine. It’s a place that will guarantee that you leave with your belly full for sure.

The owners at Brolly decided that it’s time to share the best of their own experiences during their travels and Brolly was born in September 2015. One should not miss Brolly with its striking red bus placed strategically in the front of the place along Persiaran KLCC. With plenty of personality and charm, Brolly’s interior takes on a whimsical play on groovy gas station cum car garage. The whole place is sectioned off and decorated with lots of various inspired eras’ of the garage concept. We loved how funky and eclectic the décor is.

An old Datsun is strung upside down over their pool table. Private rooms with wall panels covered in shiny hubcaps where one would never think that there are private dining rooms on the other side of the wall. More working tools splashed all over another wall. The seating are well-spaced out too so there’s lot of space. An eye catcher in the room would be the pillar that is covered in exhaust pipes, side mirrors of all shapes and tires with copper insert that acts was a wash basin with petrol pump pipes. Pretty cool right?

A huge black bar sits in the middle of the dining space, flashing with neon lights of the various kitchen logos. The other sections also has unique touches. A red wall is covered with black records, echoing a retro vibe in the room. There is also a foosball table besides the long wood table. Another section is decorated with lots of steel, grey cabinet with more tools and herringbone wood flooring. It is really quite the funky and fun place to unwind your day.

Bang Bang Baller Bar

If there is one thing to really kick off the stress, its Brolly’s Bang Bang Baller Bar and their menu of beverages. No ordinary bar, this one is housed in a red bus located at the front of the restaurant.

There are some really awesome signatures at Bang Bang Baller Bar. We checked out quite a few of their signatures of Beergaritas and High-Ballrus. The Beergaritas are huge mugs of beer and cocktail blends with fruity flavours such as Classic, Green Apple, Maracuja, Passion Fruit, Pineapple and Peach whereas their High-Ballrus are whiskey with soda and fruit so take your pick from Classic (Whiskey & Soda),Green Apple, Wild Blueberry, Passion Fruit, Maracuja, Peach and Pineapple.

I had the Pineapple Beergarita (RM30) and Passion Fruit High-Ballrus (RM30) together with another mocktail of Passion BlueberryPu-Er Ice Team Mocktail. Super refreshing but go easy as these can really be addictive and yet packed quite a hit. My favorite has to be the Beergaritas so make sure you order a few!

We were in awe at their dining menu. There are 8 eateries under Brolly Moley’s Oyster Bar, vari.EAT.y, My Wing Man, Nove9 Pizzeria, Ember & Bara BBQ, Crab Factory, Raksasa Miraiand SweetEndings. One might need several visits to try them all or round up your foodie gang and share for more options just like we did.

Moley’s Oyster Bar

The aphrodisiac bar that oysters lovers like me would flock to for succulent briny and sweet oysters. Carrying two of the highly favored oysters, one can have these au naturel or dressed up as well as shooters. If you are going in all the way, order the Mumm’s Champage to indulge in the ultimate pairing of champagne and oysters.

Both oysters are different and utterly divine in their own flavours and textures. Fine de Claire No2 Oysters (RM 144 per dozen) from France have a solid balance of clean briny saltish and sweet notes. The squeeze of fresh lemon juice heighten the flavours beautifully in a refine way.

Kelly's Gigas No4 Oysters (RM 96 per dozen) hails from the cold waters of Ireland. These are gorgeously plump with a pale creamy outlook. I recommended again just with the squeeze of fresh lemon juice as it really enhanced the oyster flavours nicely. This one is my favorite as it has a luscious creamy salty note of the sea.

My Wing Man

With wings like these, who needs to stick to the norm! My Wing Man takes flight in various Asian and Western flavours from Old FashioN BBQ Coffee, Old Fashioned Spicy Chocolate and Peppery Brown Sauce to Spicy Korean Bean Paste, E&B Sambal, Tomato Tango, Kung Fu Kung Pao, Japanese Curry and Cencaluk.

Our wings of the evening were Cencaluk Chicken Wings (RM18) and Tomato Tango Chicken Wings(RM18). No ordinary wings, the flavours on these sounds funky but rest assured, they are yummy. The Tomato Tango Chicken Wings have a similar note to tomato salsa, a little tangy and fresh with tomato flavours. The Cencaluk Chicken Wings were more piquant with a heavy and saltier note from the fermented shrimp. I would have love to try all their other flavours too, especially the Old Fashioned Spicy Chocolate!

Vari.EAT.y

We moved on to vari.EAT.y, a fun take on all the various good stuff that is perfect for snacking. Quite the mix, these nibbles are inspired from a journey on the Silk Road. Diners can munch on Grilled Skewers, Fried bites, Grilled items or Soup.

There’s a whole list of yummy dishes that diners may not be able to resist and we started with Onion Flower (RM 18). A blooming golden beauty at sight, the super large onion was cut to resemble a bloom with its onion petals evenly battered and fried to super crispy. Well-seasoned, I can taste the spices in the batter. Dip these in the side of brown sauce for extra goodness!

Calamari Tentacles (RM 18) and Prawn Popcorn (RM 23) are just meant to be with Beergaritas. Savor these crispy battered seafood with them awesome beer or Beergaritas for a light bite while chilling out or having some pool time.

If you’re looking to amp up the poshness, Brolly even has escargots! Morsels of escargot are served a la Cajun Escargots (RM 24) or Garlic Escargots (RM 24). These are baked with spices or lots of garlic bits. Ok so make sure to order some garlic bread to go with these babies.

Soup lovers seeking comfort soup will love their Short Ribs Soup (RM 35). This is such a soothing and heartwarming dish of our local version of ‘sup tulang’ but with more refinement. The tender pieces of short ribs still has a good bite while the spiced up earthy flavours of the soup had me kept spooning and enjoying the soup happily.

From the ikazaya of the streets of Japan comes the Kushiyaki (3 skewers per order). Skewers of meat, seafood and all its glory with some vegetables makes great snacking. We had their Chicken Softbone(RM9), Chicken Heart (RM9), Seafood Tofu (RM9), Quail Eggs (RM9) and Spring Onion (RM9). Never would have pegged me for a Chicken Heart fan but I’d admit to being hooked on this one as there is a good firm bite to the heart. I spied Smoked Duck, Cubed Striploin, Baby Octopus, Lamb Shoulder and Tiger Prawn for my next round…

Nove 9 Pizzeria

Brolly took 9 of their pizzas and made them green! Well green spinach dough that is… so one can enjoy your pizzas and others can get a little green with envy. You won’t want to order the classics because there’s the adventurous flavours of Lambogarlic (RM26) and Thai Beef Guava Salad (RM28).

The Lambogarlic is potent enough to keep some vampires away and yet gave you the satisfaction of superb garlicky and creamy notes. The pieces of lamb sausage and minced lamb made the pizza meaty and filling. Both lamb and garlic sauce seemed to match well in flavours.

The Thai Beef Guava Salad takes on beef with fruit. Pretty unusual pairing of beef, guava and mango but it seemed to taste pretty delicious and aromatic. Tender beef slices with a peppery note is offset by cubed crunchy guava and sweet ripe cubed mango. The creamy melted cheese with tomato sauce wrapped up the whole bunch of ingredients together while finely shredded ginger torch completed the local touch on this pizza.

Ember & Bara BBQ

Ember & Bara BBQ is hot, flaming hot dishes from the charcoal grill. It’s also East meets West and features a whole lot of seafood and meat cooked Asian and Western style. The menu let diners choose their meat or seafood for single or double portions and then choose a sauce from the list to prepare the dish. The sauces are really unique with four Asian and four Western sauces of Old Fashion Coffee, Old Fashioned BBQ Spicy Chcolate, Tarty Tropicana, Classic Chamalla, E&B Sambal, Tomato Tango, Kung Fu Kung Pao and Fragrant Tamarind Coconut. Then there are also vegetables and sides to go with all the grilled and baked meat and seafood too.

First to show up was the huge bowl of BBQ Small Yabbies (RM60 – 1kg)! Boy, were these so scrumptious! Yabbies are definitely hard to find here and we are just glad Brolly takes care of importing these live and kept in tanks till orders comes in. Then they are bbq over the hot coals to give them a lush smoky charred note and intensify their sweet meat and juices. It may take a little work to get to the meat but its worthy effort as the meat is sweet and tasty.

We went will over the seafood cooked a la Asian. Fish, crabs and prawns are baked in foil with sauces over hot coals and served with side of shredded cabbage. We had Meat Crab in E&B Sambal Sauce (RM 65), Meat Crab in Tomato Tango Sauce(RM 65), Prawns in Fragrant Tamarind Coconut (RM 25), Prawns in Tomato Tango Sauce (RM25) and Seabass in E&B Sambal Sauce (RM 50).

The E&B Sambal Sauce is fiery and packed quite a heat punch while the Tomato Tango Sauce was mellow, sweet and lightly tangy. I really enjoyed the aromatic, creamy and spiced Fragrant Tamarind Coconut flavours with hints of tangy touches.

Next up, the Western grilled meat was paired with the Western sauces. We seemed to have order quite a fair bit of this lot with steaks of Chilled Sirloin with Old Fashion BBQ Coffee Sauce (RM 34), Chilled Ribeye with Tarty Tropicana Sauce (RM 60) and Chilled Tenderloin with Old Fashion BBQ Coffee Sauce (RM 70). Make sure to tell the waitstaff how you like your steaks cooked. My favorite of the lot was the Chilled Ribeye with Tarty Tropicana Sauce.

We also enjoyed their Spring Chicken with Classic Chamalla Sauce(RM 45) and Lamb Frenched Rack with Old Fashion BBQ Spicy Chocolate (RM 120). A whole spring chicken split flat and smothered in a lovely spice marinade and served with a piquant Chamalla sauce on the side. The chicken is juicy and so moreish. The Lamb Frenched Rack was superb. Gorgeous French trimmed lamb that was so juicy and tender and smothered with a rich BBQ sauce with hints of chocolate won many hearts that evening.

With all the meat and seafood, we knew we needed some greens. We chose Grilled Watermelon & Pineapple Minty Salad (RM 15), Grilled Caesar Salad (RM 15) and Spinach & Feta Melon Salad (RM 15). I like how the grilling on the fruit or greens evoked a subtle hint of smoky and earthy notes in the salads. It’s hard to choose any favorite here as I happened to enjoy them all individually.

Crab Factory

Now Brolly happened to share the same owner as Crab Factory in SS2, hence it’s a no-brainer that Crab Factory is also available here. Showcasing New Orleans’ pride and joy, diners can enjoy the full list of Crab Factory’s menu here. Choices of seafood from the lavish King Crab, Lobster, various Crabs, Prawns, Yabby, Scallop, Baby Octopus, Japanese Snails and Mussels vie for your pick against Louisiana famed Po Boys, Southern Chicken & Waffle, Hush Puppies, Gumbo and more.

Our eyes stared in amazement at Crab Factory’s Po Boys! Bulging out of the long buns are a series of crispy battered seafood and meat with lettuce, tomatoes and onions before being smothered in classic remoulade sauce and served with heaps of thick cut fries.

We had their Fried Prawns Po'Boy (RM 22), Fried Softshell Crabs Po'Boy (RM 22) and Pulled Beef Brisket Po'Boy (RM 18). My personal favorites were the prawns and softshell crab with their full-on crispy and juicy seafood cooked well. The remoulade was creamy and very tasty, lending its magic on the seafood and bun. Besides what we had, there are also Calamari and Chicken Strips. I hope someday, Crab Factory would offer the New Orleans classic Oyster Po Boy here!! That would be a bomb for sure…

More serious seafood hit our tables and these are the lavish Neptune’s treasures of huge Brown Crab and Spanner Crabs. The seafood are priced by the grams depending on the type of seafood. Both our Brown Crab and Spanner Crab are RM19 per 100gm. As mentioned earlier, one can catch these seafood in the tanks at the back of the bar. It’s as fresh as it gets!

Brown Crab in Jamba Jamba Sauce (RM 247 – 1.3kg). It’s a very meaty crab with chunks of sweet flesh. Since we love heat, we went for the Jamba Jamba Sauce. Even at Medium Spicy Level, the heat was quite a punch. Thoroughly addictive, we even ordered Garlic Bread (RM8.90) to mop up the sauce.

I have never seen a Spanner Crab that big in my life!! I had tasted small ones that are poached, chilled and served but these hardly had much meat it in. Now the Spanner Crab here are dead serious huge in size. We opted for Spanner Crab in Garlic Butter Sauce (RM 237.50 – 1.25kg) and Spanner Crab in Signature Southern Bang Sauce Medium Spicy Level (RM 266 – 1.4kg) with added on Buddies of Button Mushroom Bag Buddies (RM 8.90). We all truly enjoyed our first experience of Spanner Crab this size. There were lots of sweet chunks of crab meat that made us oohs and aahs over it that evening. If you have never tried it, you should because Spanner Crabs this size is utterly gorgeous and truly worthy of a taste… Super shiok!

Raksaksa Mirai

Rice lovers will celebrate at the sight of Raksaksa Mirai’smenu. Name inspired by yesteryears of watching the famous Japanese animated Ultraman fighting the monsters, Raksaksa Mirai serves contemporary Japanese inspired dishes served with various rice and Japanese curry sauce.

There’s plenty of choices of meat, seafood and even a vegetarian option of dishes cooked differently and served with rice of your choice. Go for the white rice at no additional charge or go for the creative flavoured rice with a small additional charge.

We had the Tori Garlic Mayo (RM23) in Traditional Curry Sauce with Signature Rice (RM 2.50), Hotate Scallop Eryngii Omelette (RM24) in Traditional Curry Sauce with Garlic Shallot Rice (RM2.50) and Salmon Katsu in Coconut Curry Sauce(RM25)

Generous portions of everything served on a pool of your choice of Traditional or Coconut Japanese Curry Sauce is a perfect filler for big eaters. Another plus point is that the curry sauce leaned towards the savory rather than the sweet. Enjoy all these hot as it does get a tad salty when cold. The Tori Garlic Mayo was creamy and moreish while the Hotate Scallop Eryngii was buttery, savory and earthy in flavours. The crisp Salmon Katsu went well with the creamy curry sauce too.

Sweet Endings

With all the food coma we had with all the various kitchen dishes, we knew we had to go all the way and end our experiences with Sweet Endings. Our sweet treats are served in large mugs or baked in foil. Choosing can be quite a task since the list of desserts look and sound divine on the pictured menu.

In the end, we settled for Chunky Peanut Butter Granola (RM 16), Creme Brulee (RM 16) and Grilled Montel Banana Parcel (RM 16). Chunky Peanut Butter Granola was O.M.G. delicious! Lots of peanut butter crumbs with granola are layered with vanilla ice cream and blueberry sauce made my day. These are so nutty, buttery, sweet and fruity with a lush creamy note. A Must-Order please…

The Crème Brulee is also decent with all the usual creamy and smooth flavours and textures. Another treat to end the evening would be the Grilled Montel Banana Parcel. Two large Montel bananas are baked in aromatic cinnamon and other spices with butter and served with large dollop of whipped cream. So tantalizing in aroma and flavours.

Despite us working our stomachs through all the above, we barely touched half of the menu at Brolly. There’s a lot of reason to pay Brolly a visit. One gets 9 delicious experiences from all the various kitchen concepts from the menu, beergaritas to-die-for, sumptuous fresh seafood and an ambience like no other! Oh and please bring an empty stomach or round up your foodie gang for a big treat of feasting…

Koosh Koffeez @ Publika

For the Love of Coffee, Comfort, Creative and Happiness!

Coffee connoisseurs will be pleased that there’s one more coffee bar to add to their list in Publika. Koosh Koffeez, one of the newest kid on the Publika block. Koosh Koffeez dares to be different. While most coffee bars tend to focus more on just serving coffee and desserts, Koosh Koffeez also has a good list of dishes to be enjoyed with their coffees. In case one is wondering on its name, there is simply no reason to justify how Koosh Koffeez’s name was chosen except that the owners wanted a creative, fun and comfort element to the coffee bistro.

One certainly won’t miss Koosh Koffeezbecause of its striking fuchsia high-back chair at the front of the bistro. It gives everyone a chance to pose for a few shots at the grand centerpiece. My little one ran to the seat immediately!

Diners can choose to enjoy the al fresco area or dine-in at the cozy yet elegant bistro themed in shades of purple with cream. The whole place is pretty spaced out so one can enjoy your meal at ease. There is also a huge framed cabinet displaying some serious high end industrial coffee machines as well as coffee making gadgets. A bar is set on one side of the room featuring two majestic looking coffee machines. Further into the space, one can also rest comfortably at their sofas covered in plush purple shades of velvet.

A little background on Koosh Koffeez, the owners started out in another parent company of Arabica Estate, supplying coffee beans and machines to the F&B industry in Penang. Arabica Estate also have their own Arabica Estate Academy where they provide all sorts of training on coffee from introduction to sensory skills, roasting, brewing and Barista skills. All beans are roasted by their parent company and they offer many varieties of beans from all over the world. Their majority products are their blend of Brazilian and Ethiopian beans. Deciding to extend their coffee venture, Koosh Koffeez was born, the first of their coffee bistro in our city.

Koosh Koffeez offers a solid list of classics and modern coffees. We had an Espresso shot(RM7) and thought it had a good depth of buttery aroma with robust intensity of the bean.

Baller Koffee (RM16) is their signature, served in a splendor presentation with two shots of espresso, a large ice ball and a beaker with a choice of cream or soda. Here’s where the fun bit comes in, simply adjust the level of coffee and cream or soda to your liking. Though both are delicious, the soda one was a pretty unique take on coffee for me. The ice ball is created to keep the coffee chilled but won’t dilute it so fast that one cannot slowly enjoy the Baller Koffee.

Hot coffee choices had us ogling at the beautiful Romeo (RM12), a partnership of mocha with rose. There is a subtle hint of rose that made this mocha pretty feminine and romantic while the Kappuccino (RM10) was more classically presented with some coffee art.

For cold coffees, do try their Karamel Macchiato (RM14) or Karamel Macchiato Frapz (RM14). I admit to having a fondness for caramel as I think it lends a richer and caramelized note to the coffee so I really enjoy the Karamel Macchiato as it has a good balance of flavours without being too sweet.

If you are not a coffee drinker, fear not as Koosh Koffeez also has Tea, Hot Chocolate, Milk, Smoovies and Dreamshakes for you. My little one had their Orange Smoovies (RM12) which was pretty decent.

Koosh Koffeez serves modern Western cuisine with a little of everything thing thrown in. Their menu is still new and is still being evolve but there are quite a few dishes that we know will be permanent ones in the menu.

For breakfast bites, Koosh Koffeezserves all-day breakfast choices in their menu as well. Our Eggs Ben with Salmon & Asparagus(RM23) was a nothing new but was prepared well. Perfectly poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce, smoked salmon, chicken sausages, sautéed mushrooms, greens and tomatoes was hearty and decent. High points goes to the poached egg with the luscious egg yolk flowing out plus the price is very decent for all that goodies.

I like soup, any soup for that matter. The Pumpkin Ravioli Soup (RM13) is worth an order as most places only serves soup but at Koosh Koffeez, there is the added bonus of ravioli in their pumpkin soup. It’s sufficiently creamy and yet not overly sweet as some pumpkin soups are. This one makes a nice starter to warm up the appetite.

Now I would never have peg this coffee bistro to serve something French. Nevetheless, a solid pat on the back to the kitchen team for their Escargots à l’ail Gratinés (RM23). Snails cooked in heavy garlicky and parmesan cream with a sprinkle of paprika is delicious with toasts. I do wish for more toast since there are a generous pieces of escargots…

The Mandarin (RM18) features a delectable smoked duck salad served with sesame dressing on greens, roasted tomatoes, almonds and orange segments. I enjoyed this as the combination works well with its flavours of smoky salty flavour with tangy notes, creamy dressing and nutty elements.

I would never have peg Siren’s Salad(RM23) to be a pasta one! This one leans toward a pasta rather than a salad but I am not complaining as the squid ink pasta tossed with prawns, squid and shrimp roe Caesar dressing is super yummy. Moreish and tasty, this one is pretty unique and filling.

Bruschetta Trio (RM25) looked pretty simple but the triology of baguette pieces topped with Tomato & Basil, Smoked Salmon & Dill and Foie Gras Terrine makes another nice round of appetizers. While the tomato & basil seemed rather lack lustre, the smoked salmon & dill and foie gras terrine is superb! If only I can order the foie gras terrine on its own, I’d be ordering half a dozen of these…

The next two dishes takes on Mediterranean flavours in terms of mezze platter of dips, meat, bread and condiments. Choose from Mediterranean Grilled Chicken & Mushrooms (RM19) or Mediterranean Lamb & Sun Dried Tomatoes(RM21). Both were mediocre for me but my other diners really enjoy these. There are Turkish pide bread served with sautéed spiced lamb or grilled chicken, sautéed mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, hummus, garlic aioli, sour cream and tomato salsa.

Next up was pasta and pizzas. A must-order at Koosh Koffeez is their King Krab (RM33). Strands of pasta is coated with a luscious roasted sesame and cream sauce and crowned with a crispy lightly battered soft shell crab. The sauce is amazing with the pasta while the soft shell crab karaage is gorgeous. This one is truly worth every bit of calorie… I am still drooling as I write this post…

Another dish that requires full attention on enjoyment is the Karbonara (RM23). I practically want to tell everyone to leave me alone with this dish as I pay homage to the pasta laced with thick creamy sauce studded with lots of beef bacon and duck meat and finished with a gorgeous onsen egg. As we cut into the egg, the egg yolk oozed out and coat the pasta with more richness. A heavenly dish indeed!

We also had another pasta of Smoked Duck in Tomato Caper Cream (RM25). This one was pretty yummy too as the smoky duck meat is cleverly enhanced in the lightly tangy tomato caper cream sauce. The flavours are robust and hearty.

Pizza lovers will rejoice as the pizzas here are prepared with a creative fusion of ingredients. We had the Acapulco (RM25) and Kasablanca (RM25). The Acapulco has grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes and pesto on tomato-infused pizza base while the Kasablanca has a Moroccan touch of cumin mined lamb, vegetables, jalapeno and sour cream on the same dough.

Peppercorn Steak (RM38) is 200gm of prime sirloin grilled to your likings and served with rich peppercorn gravy, French fries and vegetables. Can’t go wrong with steak and fries and the peppercorn gravy was scrumptious with a good hit of peppery not.

Lamb Shank in Coffee Stew (RM45) showcased a whole lamb shank braised till tender in a brown stew laced with coffee and filled with root vegetables. The stew has a robust flavour of umami notes and the one can certainly taste the coffee note in the stew. It is served with mashed potatoes so soak up the rich stew.

Koosh Koffeez is proud of their handcrafted gourmet waffles that they named some of their waffles after famous entertainment stars. We settled on two of James’ Brownies(RM18) and Tyramisu (RM18).

James’ Brownie (RM18) is a pile of beautiful mess of chocolate waffle studded with brownie pieces. It is then piled on with toasted marshmallows, almonds, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.

Tyramisu (RM18) has an espresso infused waffle crowned with lady fingers dusted with coffee powder, a large dollop of mascarpone, scoop of vanilla ice cream, lots of dark chocolate shavings, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Expect lots of sweetness and bitterness of richness that truly evoked the tiramisu notes in this waffle.

With a tagline of ‘Miracles in Your Mouth’, Koosh Koffeez hope to have all their diners enjoy a myriad of delicious experiences at the bistro. Whether its coffee or their food, Koosh Koffeezis set on making sure their diners leave with a good memory of deliciousness. Prices are reasonable for the quality and portions they served. Highlights of Koosh Koffeez includes Baller Koffee, King Krab, Karbonara, Pizza and their handcrafted gourmet waffles!

Porky Brunch at Epicuro New Branch in Subang!

Following after its successful outlet of Epicuroin Uptown Damansara, Yugin and team has now opened their second outlet of Epicuro in USJ, Taipan area in Subang Jaya. We visited this new branch when it was only a few weeks old for brunch and also got a taste of some of the new dishes to be feature in their menu.

Words has gotten out pretty quick and the new branch was pretty filled up when we arrived. The restaurant was decorated differently from its original outlet but kept to simple, modern and a minimalist décor, sharing the same similarity to its original outlet in concept. The themed here was neutral and bright with spots of tiles on wall and bar to give the whole place a modern retro ambiance. This outlet also seats more with 60 pax as well.

The menu had a lot of repeats from its original outlet but we were assured that more new dishes are coming soon as they were still tweaking the menu. Though choices are not plenty, the ones available are sufficiently satisfying and scrumptious enough to warrant a return as always.

Cappuccino (RM10) is always a good start in the morning to get some adrenalin going…

Health conscious folks can opt for the healthy Crush Pure Fruit Smoothies that comes in Banana Pineapple, Citrus Goji-Ra, Jackfruit Twist, Super Spinach, Mango Fresh and Gua-Pel. I tried their Super Spinach and love how refreshing, thick and smooth the beverage was.

To kick off our brunch, we had their Big Breakfast with Scrambled Egg (RM26.90). A platter of hearty porky bacon, pork BBQ sausages, crispy hash browns, scrambled egg, sautéed cherry tomatoes and mushrooms and toast. Each element was well cooked, an effort that showed on the dish. The bacon was also not over crisp and had a good bite while the scrambled egg is creamy soft and delicious. One can also opt for Sunny side up egg if scrambled is not to your fancy.

Another wise option for brunch is Epicuro’sWaffle Brunch (RM18.90)! Yugin has nailed his waffle recipe to a T. Golden crisp waffle with a lightly chewy and tender inside is perfect with savory breakfast treats of bacon, pork BBQ sausage, Sunny side up egg and some greens. The light sweetness of the waffles goes so well with all the salty and savory ingredients, rendering an unforgettable brunch sensation for me.

Pasta is another wise choice at Epicuro as I had previously raved about how good their pastas are. At this outlet, one simply must try their Prawn Aglio Olio with Sauteed Spinach(RM24.90) and Mixed Mushroom & Bacon Aglio Olio (RM23.90).

Prawn Aglio Olio with Sauteed Spinach is a sublime treat of juicy sweet prawns jazzing up the classic aglio olio. Epicuro’s version also had cherry tomatoes, lots of herbs and a liberal sprinkling of crushed red pepper flakes and garlic. Flavours are big in this one and we all really enjoyed this a lot.

Another version of aglio olio but this round catered to bacon lovers is the Mixed Mushroom & Bacon Aglio Olio. This one is earthy with all the assorted mushrooms and bacon crisps sautéed with lots of added herbs and the usual suspects. The pasta here has a solid al dente bite too. At Epicuro, foodies like me will always be pleased as the pasta here are well-studded with lots bacons and other ingredients besides just pasta.

Kids and adults will also adored the Fish and Chips (RM19.90). Two thick pieces of crumbed fish are gorgeously crispy and golden with a moist inside. Served with the fish are spicy stick fries that turned out to be such a hit with us, so much so, we had to order this as additional side serving. It may not be the classic version but we are certainly enjoying this version a lot.

Our star of our brunch turned out to be Epicuro’s new item of Seared Pork Shoulder Loin. Now the first outlet already won our hearts with their creamy pork chops but we are still glad that Yugin is now offering another recipe of his famous technique for succulent and tender pork chops. This one uses pork shoulder loin and is pan seared till just right. The salty and moreish pork shoulder is divine in flavours and textures. A side of seared onions and potatoes together with steamed broccoli, carrot and radish gave the dish a healthy boost. Make sure to ask about this dish as it is still fairly new!

As said earlier, we can’t help but to order a side of Spicy Stick Fries (RM7.90)!

We thought a good brunch should deserve a sweet ending. So we had the Waffles with Homemade Ice Cream(RM15.90). Perfect waffles here again and this was made even better with Yugin’s homemade chocolate ice cream. The chocolate ice cream is also utter delicious as it has intense dark and rich bittersweet chocolate. Waffles are simply a Must-Order!

A new dessert of Homemade Raspberry Sorbet came with a surprise. Homemade, the Raspberry sorbet is intensely tangy and sweet with a burst of raspberry flavour. The additional crunch crushed biscuits, chocolate bits and chocolate sauce took the sorbet to new heights. Not on the menu yet but again, do ask as you may never know if Yugin has made a batch of this…

Tiramisu (with Alcohol) is one of Epicuro’s signature items. We never failed to order this at every visit to Epicuro. The one here is laced intensely with alcohol, making this dessert so addictive and sinful.

Looks like Epicuro USJ Taipan is going to do really well! Crowds are already in, the menu is still as stronger as ever and growing and diners are assured of scrumptious dishes that is pretty consistent on our many visits. With brunch now added, diners can enjoy Epicuro from breakfast to lunch or dinner. Go early as they tend to filled up pretty quick, especially the weekends!

Japanese Cuisine at Affordable Prices!

A recent foodie round up at Umeshu Sushi & Bar had us all very satiated with the very affordable and scrumptious Japanese restaurant discreetly hidden in Glenmarie Industrial Park, Shah Alam. Thanks to dear foodie buddy Yvonne, Umeshuis a real gem that was just waiting to be discovered.

Umeshu Sushi & Bar opened in March 2015. It was a perfect spot as there were no Japanese restaurants nearby and the owners are well-aware that there are colleges nearby and Japanese cuisine is always a crowd pleaser for many. To cater to all the students and those living nearby, the owners made their prices very affordable and yet serves up very delicious and decent Japanese dishes. Umeshualso offers delivery services within the nearby area and college with 1 hour advance order.

Seafood delivery takes place every 2 days to ensure that every item is kept as fresh as possible. The owners also made sure that most of all their sauces and dressing are made in-house such as soy sauce, sweet sauce, sesame sauce and more to keep their dishes as homemade as possible.

The restaurant is decorated with simple and pleasing design. There are booths or regular seating. Since the restaurant has a long space, catering to big or small parties are not an issue too. There is even a lovely long tatami room for privacy.

Moving to serious eats, we had a classic favorite of Edamame (RM3.30) as we try out their Bavaria non-alcoholic malt drink that comes in Pomegranate or Peach. The fizzy malt drink is pretty enjoyable…

Dinner continue to our first appetizer of Jikasei Niku Miso Hiyayakko (RM5.30) or Cold Tofu with Umeshu met Miso. Simple, fresh and easy to enjoy… the flavours are quite intense and vibrant from the soy sauce to miso while the spring onions and tobiko added more textures and flavours.

Japanese salads are often really easy to enjoy. These salads are never heavy and always uses minimal ingredients to showcase the freshness of the seafood that is very often paired with salads. Ours was Soba Avocado Salad (RM10.90), a healthy soba noodle, avocado, corn, seaweed and greens mix paired with creamy dressing.

We also had another appetizer of Salmon Avocado (RM6.90), cubed salmon with creamy cuts of avocado dressed in a tangy and creamy dressing and finished with a sprinkling of shichimi togarashi powder. So delicious!!

Sushi time and these are definitely a crowd-pleaser as we checked out some sushi and maki rolls from Umeshu’s sushi bar. Salmon Zukushi (RM16.90) is faultless, a lovely platter for salmon lovers. Salmon sashimi, salmon sushi and salmon roll with mayo is creamy and delicious. With that price tag, I’ll gladly order two platters for myself.

Another personal favorite of mine is their Aburi Salmon Sushi (RM4.90 for two pieces). Creamy cuts of salmon is lightly brushed with teriyaki sauce, lightly torched and served with pearls of salmon roe and a dab of mayo. Simply scrumptious!

Goka Irodori (RM16.90) is a role one would love when one wants a little of everything in their roll. Sushi roll with pickled daikon radish and cucumber is covered with slices of assorted sashimi, finished with a drizzle of mayo and topped with ebiko.

Another roll to check out would be the house signature roll of Umeshu Special Fried Salmon Roll (RM13.90). Albeit a less healthy version of maki but is yummy as the maki roll has salmon, cucumber and cheese inside, crumbed and fried still crispy outside. A drizzle of sauce and a touch of ebiko sealed the deal. There’s more adventurous rolls to tempt diners with Fire Oyster Roll, King Prawn Roll, Norway Roll, Fire Spider Roll and more.

We edged in slowly to mains and had the Salmon Kobuto Teriyaki (RM10.90) to start. The grilled salmon head has a nice teriyaki glaze. It may need some effort to pick through the head but the fleshy bits are silky smooth and creamy.

Seasonal Pan Fried Salmon Bone is a dish the chef whipped up especially just for us. There is a lovely spicy note to the dish. The salmon bone still has a fair bit of meat on it and we did our best to polish this clean too. The additions of onions and bell peppers with other bits of vegetables made the flavours sweeter. Not in the menu but do ask the waitstaff…

More Yakimono followsw with Ika Maruyaki(RM14.90) or Roasted Squid and Saba Shioyaki (RM14.90). Both nicely grilled and sufficiently satisfying in flavours and textures.

Steak lovers will definitely enjoy the Teppan Gyu Steak (RM18.90). The steak was gorgeously charred and remained tender and juicy. Served with mashed potato, corn and broccoli on a sizzling hot plate, it was certainly a delicious main course. If you prefer your steak a bit more rare, make sure to let the staff know.

We moved on to more classic favorites in Japanese cuisine. We had two tempura dishes of Tempura Moriawase (RM15.90) and Tempura Mantis Prawn (RM8.90). The Tempura Moriawase was a classic mix of fried tempura prawn, capsicum, eggplant, pumpkin and mushroom. Nicely executed with light crispy batter and sweet prawns with various vegetables cooked well.

The Tempura Mantis Prawn were more unique as I haven’t seen this much in Japanese restaurant. Still, I am not complaining as these were decent too with the crispy tempura and tempura sauce.

If there is one thing to order at Umeshu, it’s their rice dishes! We had three and all 3 were indeed awesome in flavours and textures.

Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko (RM15.90), a hot stone bowl rice topped with salmon, egg, ebiko, spring onion and special sauce. Mixed these all together and it is sublime! Crusty bits of rice coated with egg yolk and lightly cooked salmon, sauce and ebiko is such an amazing dish that I will indeed return for. I had two helpings from this portion because it was just too darn irresistible…

Kamameshi or Kettle Rice, is the traditional Japanese way to prepare rice. The special Kama or iron pot makes a perfect single dish meal as one can also add any other ingredients in and cook them together. Then the rice is usually served in the pot at tableside as it will also keep the rice warm. We had two varieties of Kamameshi of Gomoku Kamameshi (RM20.90) and Unagi Kamameshi (RM29.90).

Gomoku Kamameshi is assorted seafood, chicken, mushrooms, burdock, aburage, spring onions and ebiko while Unagi Kamameshi is Japanese grilled eel with mushrooms, burdock, aburage, seaweed and wasabi. Choosing one is not easy as both are really aromatic, flavourful with crispy bits of the fluffy rice. So choose either one depending on your favorite ingredient and you won’t be disappointed as these make great tummy fillers as well as sharing meal.

Umeshu also has lots noodles dishes from ramen, soba to udon and we tried their signature Ishiyoki Curry Udon (RM10.90). The thick and creamy Japanese curry is moreish, leaning towards more savory than sweet. Just my kind of flavour as I do not enjoy sweet curry. Serving bubbling hot in hot stone bowl, the udon comes with a tempura whole egg, seafood and spring onions. This one is really pretty decent in my books.

We also had a large bottle of Umeshu Wine from Choya, classic Japanese plum wine that the restaurant is named after. Perfect to go with the dishes if you asked me…

We barely covered their menu at Umeshu Sushi & Bar. All of us really thought that the prices are very reasonable for their dishes served and portions are good too. Umeshudefinitely serves much credit for their effort in serving up affordable and scrumptious Japanese cuisine. Must-orders for me are their Salmon Avocado, Aburi Salmon Sushi, Teppan Gyu Steak, Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko and Kamameshi!

Imparting Entrepreneurial Skills to the Underprivileged Children

The world is divided into haves and have-nots – and that division begins early.

Millions of children around the world fall short of basic human rights – food, clothing and shelter – and often education that facilitates the pursuit of a better life to escape the cycle of poverty.

It is hard to imagine legions of underprivileged young for whom fast food is a rare luxury, have never washed with shampoo or owned a toothbrush.
They are not just in desperate Third World countries. They are right here, in our midst - in Malaysia's prosperous cities and deep rural reaches. They are of different family background and races, reflecting our nation's multi-cultural composition.

Children's Day - an occasion to cherish our junior citizens - is an opportunity to reach out to these needy ones at the Children’s Day Charity Bazaar on 8 November at The School in Jaya One, organized by Living Hope.

Living Hope is a non-profit organization that aims to reach out to poor, needy and marginalized children in Malaysia and internationally.Living Hope's outreach programme is for children below 12,” explained founder and Chairman, Dr Peggy C Wong. “Under the supervision of an older mentor, they observe and learn simple business skills during the buying and selling at the stalls. It is also a boost for their self-esteem and life skills,” she added.

Charles Wong, Executive Director of Tetap Tiara Sdn Bhd, developer for Jaya One and The School affirmed, “We believe that every child deserves the best start in life as well as an equal chance to fulfill their dreams, regardless of their cultural and socio-economic status.”

Held from 11am until 5pm, various college-age volunteers and younger kids will be manning more than 60 booths ranging from food, creative and imaginative products as well as participating in exciting performances and activities to show off the entrepreneurial spirit of young Malaysians.

The coupons are available for sale at RM50 per booklet with everything is only priced from RM5 at the bazaar. More than 5,000 visitors are expected to throng the bazaar to support Malaysian small businesses and also do their bit for charity.

“Through the meaningful collaboration with Living Hope, we hope that funds will reach out to more underprivileged children, so that they are able to receive education,'' added Wong of Tetap Tiara Sdn Bhd.

Coinciding with the organization’s 8th anniversary, the proceeds will go towards Living Hope's myriad of activities - such as hot meals and educational materials to help children from families with income under RM700.

“We and the children are deeply grateful to Mr Charles Wong of The School for the kind generosity in working with us to make this bazaar a success,” Dr Peggy C Wong concluded.

Let's give with our hearts...

Genji is Back with a Brand New Dining Experience!

Genji Japanese Restaurant has just gone through a major refurbishment and is set to impress its diners with its gorgeous new ambiance. Located at Hilton Petaling Jaya, Genji has been serving authentic Japanese cuisine to many Japanese aficionados since 1988. Named after a legendary nobleman named as ‘The Shining Genji’ of feudal Japan who was famed for his appreciation and great passion for fine food, wine and lifestyle.

Genji has always been renowned for its elegant and Japanese themed ambiance. After its recent renovation, the interior has been elevated to an air of modern contemporary ambiance that joins today’s generation of classy Japanese restaurants. Boasting a spacious setting with 148 seating, Genji offers diners its signature sections of various dining rooms and private tatami rooms.

At the entrance, diners can opt to diner at the majestic elevated sushi bar or head on over to the main dining room, two spacious teppanyaki counters else choose for the six private tatami dining rooms available all over the restaurant.  The soft glow of warm lightings enhanced the elegant and warmness of the neutral themed décor in all the space. Natural Zen elements of wood and stones are incorporated everywhere. Gorgeous paper lamp shades added charm and elegance to the private rooms. Genji is perfect for any occasions for family, friends and business entertainment.

Genji’s revamp interior also led to a new menu. Head Chef of Genji, Chef Richard Teoh has over 27 years of experience in Genji. Chef Teoh focuses on his talents on ‘traditional modern’ cuisine by capturing distinct Japanese ingredients crafted with modern Japanese techniques and presentations. Chef Teoh and his team have won the prestigious Malaysian Tatler Best Restaurant award for five consecutive years from 2010 to 2014. Diners can savor a long list of Japanese classics of freshly prepared Sashimi and Sushi, traditional Kaiseki dinner, Teppanyaki, Tempura, Sukiyaki and more.

Our dinner commenced with a trio of appetizers artfully presented on a long rectangle platter hosting three delectable appetizers.

Niku To Negimaki Furai (RM37) or Deep Fried Breaded Sliced Beef with Spring Onion is served with Tonkatsu sauce. My favorite of the three, the beef roll has a delightful crispy exterior with a juicy and tender interior of the roll. This is such a treat as the roll is delicious and easy to enjoy. The roll has a bed of tempura kakiage of vegetables which is also pretty yummy.

The second appetizer is Age Nasu Momiji Oroshi (RM15) or Deep Fried Eggplant with Spicy Grated Radish. Soft slivers of eggplant has soaked up the savory shoyu based and is crowned with a small amount of spicy grated radish and bonito flakes that gave some umami notes to the eggplant.

Morokyu (RM16) or Fresh Cucumber with Moromiso is a simple appetizer of crunchy cucumber pieces marinated with bean paste. It’s quite light and savory.

Next up, salads are also given a unique twist at Genji. Our Moyashi (RM23) or Bean Sprout with Seaweed & Chinese Spinach in Goma Dressing has loads of textures. The crunch of the bean sprouts, seaweed and Chinese spinach stems are paired with sweet juicy cherry tomatoes, tasty bonito flakes with a liberal sprinkling of nutty sesame seeds. The creamy and nutty sesame dressing worked its magic to combine all the textures and flavours for a light and crunchy salad.

The next salad of California Salad (RM41) or Garden greens with Salmon, Tuna, Avocado, Crab stick and Flying Fish Roe in Wasabi Mayo Dressing was a bowl filled with deliciousness. Sashimi cubes of fish with crisp greens, crispy crab sticks and popping fish roes are married together with a luscious and tingling wasabi dressing. It had just the right balance of wasabi to give the salad a kick but not to overwhelm the senses from the Japanese horseradish.

We moved on to more serious seafood courses of a large Kaki Chili Mayo (RM17 per piece) presented in a pretty blue platter. The Baked Fresh Oyster with Spicy Mayo is simply marvelous and sublime. The large briny and sweet oyster is smothered in a heat kicking mayo sauce and broiled to perfection. The heat in this dish really gave the oyster a solid robust hit of flavours that had us crave for more. You may want to order a few of these because it is simply addictive for those who love spicy food!

Out to impress us is the Jumbo Ebi Maki (RM76)orReversed Roll with Tiger Prawn Tempura, Caviar, Salad and Cucumber… and it did! The tiger prawn is huge and steals the limelight in this sushi roll. Each roll is a mouthful of crispy and juicy sweet prawns with rice, seaweed and fish roes.

Chef Richard’s Genji’s Signature Trio Combo (RM140) is a popular choice with diners ever since it was served at the restaurant. Not a surprise as the combo is pretty impressive at sight. It is like a little buffet on a platter and this main course is rather filling on its own.

Start the trio with the Combination of Rolled Salmon, Tuna & Sea Bream Sashimi with Avocado. Sheer simplicity of the freshest cut of sashimi with ripe luscious avocado served on a bed of ice is why Sashimi will always be a favorite for many avid Japanese fans. Freshness prevails here…

Next is another Japanese favorite of Grilled Cod Fish with Salt on Garlic Fried Rice. Beautifully grilled, the cod is sweet, sublime and savory. Pearls of salmon roe added a rich briny depth to the cod. Garlic fried rice was decent and paired well with the fish. A squeeze of lemon added wonders of freshness to the cod.

The third star on the platter is the Baked Tiger Prawn with Spicy Mayo Sauce on Potato Salad. Huge tiger prawn sectioned into two pieces is layered with spicy mayo sauce and baked. The spicy heat and creamy richness of the mayo gave the sweet bouncy prawns an air of lusciousness. It is just as gorgeous as the spicy oyster earlier. Paired with creamy potato salad, the dish was a tribute to the more modern and Western approach to the cuisine.

For some warming comfort, diners can opt for the Shiromi Dofu Mushi (RM41) orBraised Bean Curd with Sea Bass and Vegetables in Light Sauce. The delicate nuances of bonito and konbu broth did the whole dish justice with its earthy savory flavours, letting the pan seared sea bass shine in taste. Silken tofu and some vegetables balanced the dish in terms of nutrition. Every drop of broth was cleared with much satiation…

Unagi Fried Rice (RM47) may be one of the best combination I have enjoyed in fried rice. Smokey caramelized eel gave fried rice a glorious and unctuous flavour of deliciousness. It’s beautifully aromatic as well. A must-order if you love unagi!

Genjidoes have a soid list of desserts and we opted for a unique one of Banana Spring Roll (RM33). Crispy fried banana spring roll is served with a slice of green tea ice cream cake. The hot and cold combo is a treat!

With an extensive list of over 20 pages of Japanese dishes, Omakase lunch sets, bentos and more, there are plenty of choices for diners with discerning palates. Coupled with its gorgeous new décor, Genji is a new dining experience set to impress many.

Besides a la carte, Genji Japanese Restaurant offers diners an extensive Japanese dinner buffet on Saturday, priced at RM139nett per adult from 8.00pm to 10.30pm.

Dine between 6.00pm to 7.45pm to enjoy the early bird special price at RM127nett per adult.

Buffet lunch is also available on Sundays from 11.30am to 2.30pm at RM139nett per adult.

Children (5-11 years old) eat at half price.

Modern Korean Café with A Spicy Kick!

Korean cuisine continues to grow in our nation and it has almost become a norm for many to enjoy the cuisine famous for its pungent kimchi and charcoal BBQ. Kafe Go To School is one of the latest Korean café to join the little Korean township at Solaris Mont Kiara. Kafe Go To School takes Korean cuisine to whole new level of modern home-style Korean cuisine with a fun and whimsical twist.

Take the fun yesteryears of schools and bento lunches, Kafe Go To School makes a play on casual and comfort food in classroom concept setting café. Helmed by Chef Woo Young, whose prior Korean eatery in Taiwan became so popular and she even caught the attention of Hong Kong Tourism Board who interviewed her on her food. Together with her sister and her sister’s husband, Chef Woo decided to open Kafe Go To School here to showcase her trendy home-style Korean dishes served in casual style. Besides Korean dishes, Kafe Go To School has awesome desserts as well as coffee.

The whole ambiance as mentioned earlier is based on a school classroom concept. Chalkboards, casual low and colorful chairs and tables, various knick-knacks of school stuff, school bell and more added to the concept. The whole café is cozy and perfect for family and friends to hang out. Since it’s a classroom, it’s really perfect to bring the young ones along too. We brought our kids along and they had such a good time at the café as it is kids’ friendly and there are some things that will keep the kids busy too.

The menu at Kafe Go To School is rather playful with added photos of some dishes to make ordering easier. There are also specials on the chalkboard. Whatever you may order, I highly recommend that you save some room for desserts!

We adored the fresh homemade ades they serve. Combining fresh citrus fruits with lemonade and soda, the Citrus Ades(RM10), Grapefruitade (RM14) and Lemonade (RM13) was really refreshing and juicy. These are also perfect to balance the heavy flavours of the Korean dishes to come.

The menu has a solid list of varieties to cater to adults and children. We started our dinner that evening with Hae Mul Pa Jeon or Seafood & Spring Onion Pancake (RM24). A classic Korean favorite, I have always enjoyed Pa Jeon. The version here is superb. Thick square slices of pancake are heavily studded with lots of spring onions and seafood bits. I like how they made the pancake here thicker so it has a better taste of filling. Add some of the chili sauce served on the side for extra yumminess!

There are Japanese sushi rolls and there are Korean Kimbabs. These are similar except Kimbab uses rice that are seasoned with seasoning like salt and sesame oil but no vinegar like sushi rolls. There are many varieties of Kimbab but we opted for the Korean Original Kimbab(RM11.90). This one has spinach, carrot, pickled radish, egg omelette and hotdog. I would be happy to enjoy this anytime…

We also had their Salmon Roll (RM27.90) as recommended by the owner. Crab stick, egg omelette and cucumber roll are covered in slivers of salmon and topped with creamy sauce before it is torched and crowned with fish skin. Nicely done and is tasty as well.

If you are dining in a group of 3 or more, Passion Bento (RM88) would be a good and filling sharing platter. It makes an impressive sight of metal bento boxes filled with lots of Korean dishes of fried chicken, noodles and rice. There are some hot stuff there as well as non-spicy dishes. Let’s check out what Passion Bento has…

There are two fried chickens in the platter. One is a non-spicy version of Go To School Fried Chicken and the second is super spicy Fried Yang Neum Chicken with Sweet Chili Sauce. The Go To School Fried Chicken has a crunchy batter with savory seasoning. The spicy Fried Yang Neum Chicken is also very crunchy but drenched in a super-hot and sweet chili sauce. I like how they added crushed peanuts to the spicy chicken to give it another texture and nutty flavour.  If you cannot take too much heat, it is best to let the wait staff know because they can have the kitchen team adjust the heat on the sauce.

There are two dishes of glass noodles of Jab Chae or Stir Fried Korean Fried Glass Noodles with Vegetables and Kim Male Ri Fried Glass Noodle Covered with Seaweed & Rice Balls. The Jab Chae is a classic Korean dishes available at most places here and this version is a vegetarian version. It’s decent and has the usual lightly chewy sweet potato glass noodle texture. The Kim Male Ri Fried Glass Noodle is quite unique. Featuring stir fried glass noodles wrapped in seaweed and deep fried with a crispy thin batter and finished with sesame seed, these are yummy and easy to enjoy. There is also a side of seaweed rice balls that were warm, flavour and so delicious. My little one had two of the rice balls and really loved them a lot.

The last dish on the Passion Bento is the Kimchi Bibim Guksu Cold Noodle, a cold thin rice noodle served in a light cold broth with some vegetables, an egg and a dollop of super spicy chili sauce. This one fell a little short on flavour but that is easily remedied once you stir up the chili sauce which gives the noodles a fiery note.

Korean cuisine often has a lot of stews. This could be due to the cold climates in Korea and stews are one of the best one pot dishes to warm up the tummy. While there are many stews, Kafe Go To School’shouse signature is the So Gal Bi Jjm or Braised Short Ribs Steamed in Soy Sauce Seasoning (RM126).

Large bone-in 1.2kg of beef short ribs are cooked in a broth of gan jang soy sauce seasoning made from 9 different kinds of ingredients such as Korean pear, apple, ginseng, pineapple and more. This is served with with carrot, radish, chestnut and jujube. One can opt to have add-ons such as udon, rice cake, cheese or fried rice with additional charges. This stew has a really delicious sweet and savory flavour with a lovely aroma. Since it’s made with fresh and natural ingredients, I also didn’t feel thirsty after enjoying the broth. There is also a spicy version.

If you don’t take beef, then the Dakk Han Ma Ri or Whole Chicken Cooked with Vegetable & Ginseng Broth (RM70) will be a better choice for you. This Korean chicken soup is said to be very nutritional and good for health. Perfect to cure a cold or simply to warm the tummy with comfort, the broth is deliciously savory with robust chicken essence and very subtle hints of ginseng in the back note. The chicken was not as tasty and this was due to the fact that all the yummy chicken essence has been released to the broth. I was really satisfied with this pot of comfort food as the broth is really very tasty.

More Korean stews and the Bulgogi Kimchi Soon Du Bu-Jigae (RM23) proved to be too spicy in heat for us. I am very sure it would have been better if the heat factor is reduced. So make sure to let the wait staff know to go easy on the chili here. There are loads of ingredients in this stew with beef, bean curd, kimchi, mushrooms, spring onions and more. Hand me a bowl of rice please…

I only had a little taste of the Cheese Kimchi Bulgogi Rice Burger (RM19.90) and I like it. It’s trendy to savor rice burgers and this one was a delicious combination of spicy bulgogi beef with cheese and lettuce sandwiched with seaweed rice patties. Served with potatoes and cabbage salad, it’s a solid and filling meal.

Another dish worth ordering for adults and kids is the Salmon Rice Pizza (RM35). Crispy rice based pizza is covered with special creamy sauce and salmon and lightly baked. It is finished with flying fish roes and lots of spring onions. I would order this again because I enjoyed the crispy rice with salmon and creamy sauce.

Korean Bingsus are quite a hit these days and you simply must order Kafe Go To School Bingsu! These are huge in portion so share them as it is nearly impossible to finish one bingsu on your own unless you didn’t eat anything. That said, you still might get a little brain freeze from the large portion of snow ice…

First up, our kids went wild when they say the Very Very Thank You Snow Milk BIngsu (RM33). A huge bowl of milky snow ice is piled with loads of berries, cornflakes and a scoop of ice cream with berry coulis. The milky snow ice was so fine and literally melts-in-the-mouth upon contact. It has such a refine creamy and milk flavour that is very enjoyable with the sweet and tangy berries. We all devoured this happily though we were pretty stuffed from dinner.

If you love the flavours of green tea, opt for the Green Tea Bingsu (RM24.90). Another large bowl piled high with fine milky shaved snow ice, covered with a soy and green tea powder, a large dollop of creamy red bean and scoop of green tea ice cream.

I saved the best for last… cheese lovers do Not want to miss the U-Ja Cheesecake Bingsu (RM24.90). This is like the bomb of Bingsu! A large piece of berry cheesecake that has so much berries in it, is served with a little mountain of snow ice covered in a sweet, tangy and stickly citron jam. The super luscious cheesecake goes so well with the tangy, fresh and milky snow ice. I am such a huge fan of this Bingsu. So worth every calorie that comes with this…

It’s really a different side of Korean cuisine at Kafe Go To School. Besides the homestyle Korean dishes here, Bingsu desserts are truly a must-have here. The café also is halal. A great casual and easy going place to chill with some trendy Korean cuisine and heavenly desserts!

Alcatel Flash 2 Review

$

0

Last week, Alcatel One Touchlaunched itslatest prime model, the Alcatel Flash 2that pushes the limits in camera and phone. Here’s a review on my thoughts and experience of the Alcatel Flash 2.

Set in a bright lime green and white box, the new Alcatel Flash 2 is a very affordable smartphone for its range.

Unboxing my Alcatel Flash 2

The set consist of Alcatel Flash 2, leather flipcase, screen protector, headphone, charger, USB cable, user manual and warranty card.

The moment I set my eyes on the Alcatel Flash 2, sleekness came to mind. The ergonomically design smartphone by Alcatel One Touch is sleek, slim and swanky. When it comes to purchasing anything for that matter, the outlook of the item must always be pleasing to the eye. Indeed, this smartphone was. The overall build quality was solid while the aesthetic was appealing on the eye.

One can grip the phone with one hand comfortably and also use it with its One Hand functionality!

The display screen is actually a pleasing size of 5.0-inches IPS HD display with Dragon Trail glass protection. I find that I can easily flip through the screen and also type comfortably on the keypad. Using the same concept as other Android smartphones, there is the main Android home key at the bottom of the screen, allowing users to head to the home page with a single click. With a single touch on the home key, two other keys lite up for further commands.

The power start up key is on the right side of the phone together with a volume key and camera key as well.

The back of the smartphone has the 13-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash while the front has 5.0-megapixels secondary camera with LED Flash as well.

Using Android 5.1 Lollipop platform, the display graphics and colors is pretty decent for its price. The overall speed in opening and flipping through the smartphone is solid and fast. Battery life is also another highlight of this smartphone.

To a blogger like me who makes full use of the camera functions, the Alcatel Flash 2 certainly has a decent camera built in for its range. With it’s tagline of Let’s Mobigraph– a term that combines mobile and photography, the Flash 2 has quite a few multi-features on its camera functions. From Face Beauty for selfies to Super Fine, HDR, Track, Panaroma and more, it’s really enough for users to play around with the camera.

Here are some of the photos taken with the Flash 2.

I am not much of a selfie person but I did try it and thought it was a solid B+ for its Face Beauty function. Not as smooth or sharp as I would have like but it did make my selfie look dreamy and smooth. Instead I chose to take my little precious with the regular photo function and found it good, considering it wasn’t natural lighting, the photo was bright and clear with good colors of the photo after transferring it to the computer, which is another plus point since some photos loses their quality after being transferred to the computer.

Took more still life things and found them very good too upon close up shots. Colors look quite amazing for the price of the phone in my opinion.

The Flash 2 is definitely an improved version of the previous Flash Plusand Flash, showing how committed Alcatel is in the mobile industry. For a smartphone within its range, the Flash 2 is certainly topping the chart with its smartphone hardware and software functions.

Alcatel OneTouch Flash 2 Specs at a glance:

·         1.3GHz Mediatek MT6753 octa-core processor
·         2GB RAM
·         5.0-inches IPS HD display, Dragon Trail glass protection, 1280 × 720 resolution
·         16GB internal storage, expandable via microSD
·         13.0-megapixels Samsung ISOCELL camera with Auto Focus, Dual LED and Dual Tone Flash
·         5.0-megapixels secondary camera with LED Flash
·         3G, HSPA+, LTE
·         Dual-SIM, dual LTE
·         WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, aGPS
·         3,000mAh Li-Ion battery
·         Android 5.1 Lollipop

For a camera that is priced under RM600, the Alcatel Flash 2 is pretty much value-for-money in its range. Love the aesthetic appeal on the phone, the speed of the software and the camera that takes very decent pictures in low light as well as offering quite a few camera functions.

The prime phone model will be sold exclusively in Malaysia at Lazada, which is South East Asia’s No.1 online shopping and selling destination. Lazada’s unique flash sales for Alcatel Flash 2 is be held on 26 October 2015, from 10.00am to 2.00pm. The new model is available in Volcanic Grey and Mica White and comes at a recommended retail price of RM549.

Let’s #CutiCutiMalaysia at Labuan…

More adventures with me and this round, I am flying to Labuan, one the Federal Territory of Malaysia off the coast of Borneo in East Malaysia for the weekend. Thanks to an invite by Dorsett Grand Labuan and Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB), we had Pilot Parker with us as we arrive early in the morning at the KLIA2 to catch one of their direct flights to Labuan daily.

Located off the coast of the state of Sabah, Labuan is made up of Labuan Island and six smaller islands of Big Rusukan, Burung, Daat, Kuraman, Small Rusukan and Papan island. The name Labuan is derive from the Malay word ‘labuhan’, translated as harbour. Labuan is best known as an offshore financial centre and its rich resources for oil and gas activities. The duty free Labuan is also a favorite for many as a holiday destination with all its islands and history.

Arriving at KLIA2 early, we checked into MAB Golden Lounge located near GATE A2 at the Domestic Departure hall. One can only access MAB Golden Lounge when one is flying Business Class with MAB. We were lucky enough to be given a sneak peek access to the Golden Lounge courtesy of MAB for this trip.

As soon as we checked into the Golden Lounge, we were pretty stoked at the spacious sections of the lounge. There is a large cabinet to park our luggage and lockers to lock up our priceless items so that one can enjoy the lounge in comfort and peace of mind.

Business class flyers can choose to enjoy a lovely buffet spread in the various comfort and spacious seating spread all over the lounge. There is the casual section with sofa and low tables or the regular seating spread along the side of the room with a view of all the activities of the fleet of MAB planes and another area to catch up on media entertainment. Wherever one chooses, privacy and comfort are in mind.

Food is one thing that never fails to please everyone! MAB Golden Lounge serves a decent list of Asian and Western dishes to cater to its flyers. From our national favorite dish of Nasi Lemakto Curry Laksa, Prawn Noodle and Assorted Pastries, Bread, Cereal, Yoghurt, Cookie and more, the Golden Lounge offers bites of satisfaction. Served in small portions, food is replenish quickly to keep it fresh and hot.

Fresh piping hot Croissant

There’s plenty of beverage as well to keep us all happy from coffee to tea and juices as well as yoghurt drinks.

My six year old D has a good time helping himself to his favorite breakfast dishes that morning!

I had the Nasi Lemak and it was super yum. The coconut rice is so fluffy and ‘lemak’ from the coconut milk. One can enjoy the rice with Sambal Sotong and Chicken Rendang together with its usual sidekicks. The rice was so good, I had a second helping of it.

After our breakfast, we got ready to depart for Labuan with our Pilot Parkers!

Traveling with children has its perk! We get to board the flight first on the Boeing 737-800. Greeted by the warm hospitality of MAB flight crew, we settle into our seats for the flight.

We passed the Business Class section and couldn’t resist checking out how spacious and larger the seats was…

Economy Class section Seating

MAB Entertainment system with safety information before flight take-off.

Traveling with children can be difficult. Restlessness is always an issue with most children and being the parent, we always have make sure we prepare enough to keep our little D busy. The 2 hour and 30 minutes flight may seem short to us but to children, every second counts.

We didn’t even need to keep our D busy. He got busy himself with the airline Entertainment system on the dashboard facing our seats as soon as he sat down. It is very user-friendly and D picked it up in no time at all to search for Kid’s Movies, Music and other entertainment. There is a remote available else simply use the touch screen for navigation. Blankets and pillow are provided on request. Daddy was also kept busy too…

Mommy squealed in delight when she saw the USB charger. It’s certainly a plus point since flyers can also charge their electronic gadgets while on flight.

Chow Time!

Not long after take-off, our meals and drinks were served on board by the cabin crew. Ever so poise and calm, the cabin crew manage to adhere to our requests in grace which can be difficult especially when the air stewardess is dressed in our national batik printed kebaya!

Don’t ask me why but most of us in our traveling group seemed to have a fixation on the Peanuts served by Malaysia Airlines. It is still the best peanut in my books…

In our flight from Kuala Lumpur to Labuan, we were served sandwiches for breakfast. The sandwiches came with a big cookie as well as beverages of our choice. On our return trip from Labuan to Kuala Lumpur, we were served more substantial servings of rice with a dish or pasta. There is also a big cookies as well.

The flight was smooth and relaxing and I even managed to doze off a bit. Both our go to and return flights were on time as scheduled which is another plus point because time is crucial when flying as one would not want to be late for any connecting flights or arrivals.
